Spring 2014: 21st Annual MLK Student Appreciation Luncheon nomination period

by Michelle Saport  |

Everybody makes a difference! Shine a light on a deserving student while helping build a tradition!

What is it? The Martin Luther King Jr. Student Appreciation Luncheon is an annual event celebrating the many contributions of our students who make a difference in the UAA community. The program is sponsored by the Chancellor's Office and Student Activities. One of Dr. King's important messages was that we as individuals can make a difference in the lives of others and in society.

Staff and faculty members recommend students who make a difference in the university, the community, their department and/or their classes through their efforts.

All recommended students as well as staff and faculty who submit recommendations are invited to the luncheon on Friday, Jan. 23, 2015, at 11:45 a.m. in the Student Union. Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Bernard Lafayette Jr., a Civil Rights Movement activist and Freedom Rider who worked with Dr. King and others involved in the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of this landmark decision, Dr. Lafayette will share his first-hand perspective of this important period in our nation's history.

Which students can be recommended? Any UAA student who makes a difference at UAA, in the community, their department and/or their classes through outstanding efforts.

Who can recommend students? Any UAA staff or faculty member may recommend students. We request you limit recommendations to no more than three students.

How do you recommend your students? You can recommend up to three students who make a difference at www.uaa.alaska.edu/mlk. The deadline for recommendations is Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014, at 5 p.m.

We look forward to celebrating outstanding students and Dr. King's legacy on Jan. 23, 2015, with you!
