Nov. 25, 2014: 'The Ecology and Evolution of Life Histories in the Sea'

The Department of Biological Sciences has completed the search process for the position of assistant professor in quantitative biology and would like to invite you to a series of presentations given by the candidates in order to introduce you to their work and what they will have to offer UAA.

The department is pleased to invite you to the second presentation, given by Holly K. Kindsvater, Ph.D.

Kindsvater will be presenting her work on fish life-history traits: how they evolve and their consequences for population dynamics. Kindsvater's current research is focused on organisms with complex life histories such as salmon, groupers and the ocellated wrasse. Holly received her B.S. in marine biology from the University of California Santa Cruz, and received her M.S. and Ph.D. in ecology and evolutionary biology from Yale University. Holly is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Simon Fraser University and UC Santa Cruz.

Kindsvater talks about her postdoctoral work on her website stating, "I am currently a NSF Postdoctoral Fellow in biology and math, in collaboration with John Reynolds at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, and Marc Mangel at UC Santa Cruz. My research addresses how life history traits (such as age at maturity, or sex change) are related to population resilience and extinction risk of marine species that change sex. I have two goals: (1) to understand the factors that are most important for predicting the population dynamics and extinction risk of groupers (Serranidae), many of which are globally important species for commercial and recreational fisheries, and (2) to consider the effects of different management scenarios (e.g., marine protected areas vs. slot size limits for fishing) for the conservation of these species."
