2014 Alaska Heart Run

The Alaska Heart Run returns to UAA this Saturday, April 26, for its 36th year. The race usually draws a crowd of around 5,000 people and affects traffic flow throughout campus. If you'll be visiting campus Saturday, please plan ahead and consider carpooling, bussing or biking instead of driving.

Brace yourself, Finals Week is coming. UAA's students can find support in the Student Union with free food, tips for anxiety management and chair massages. If that doesn't work, there will be trained service dogs in the library, ready to offer some silent, tail-wagging support.

Two years ago, Robert Robl, a UAA University Honors College student, had never heard of the tragic 1918 flu epidemic that killed millions of people worldwide and decimated Alaska Native villages. Now he and a UAA professor, Dr. Eric Bortz, are hoping to learn what made that flu so devastating and uncover strategies that could help vanquish it and other viruses.

Spring 2014: UAA adds bike-share program

UAA's new bike-share program still needs a part-time volunteer student manager, but 50 taxi-yellow cruisers will be available for check out from the UAA/APU Consortium Library circulation desk once local trails clear up. All you'll need is a Wolfcard and a helmet.

Alumni Spotlight: LaVerne Francis Reid

Fully committed to her family, her career and her education, LaVerne spent 11 years gradually moving toward graduation day. Her impressive career with the FAA later led her from coast to coast and even to the White House, but her passion throughout has been the rights of working women. “There are doors that were closed, but that’s ok. I didn’t worry about those. Mostly I moved around them.”

Student Spotlight: Katie Browning

Katie Browning

Katie found her passion on campus in an elective American Sign Language class. She fell in love with the university's Deaf community and served as president of ASL Club her senior year. For her achievements, Katie will earn Leadership Honors at UAA's commencement ceremony next week.
