Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2:30-4 p.m. UAA/APU Consortium Library, Room 307

The Department of Biological Sciences has completed the search process for the position of assistant professor in microbiology, pathogenic bacteriology, and would like to invite you to a series of presentations given by the candidates. The candidates will introduce you to their work and what they have to offer UAA.

The department is pleased to invite you to the third presentation, "Natural variation in the immune response to gut microbiota," given by Kat Milligan-Myhre, Ph.D., on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015.

Milligan-Myhre's research is centered on the investigation of natural genetic variation in immune responses to microbiota using three spine stickleback and zebrafish models.

Milligan-Myhre received her B.S. in medical microbiology and immunology and received her Ph.D. from the Microbiology Doctoral Training Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow with the University of Oregon working under co-mentors Karen Guillemin, Ph.D., with the Institute of Molecular Biology, and William Cresko, Ph.D., of the Institute of Ecology and Evolution.

On the Cresko Laboratory's website, Milligan-Myhre describes her primary research interests as follows: "I am interested in the relationship between the host genetic background and the microbial community membership of the gut. I use both zebrafish and stickleback to examine which immune cells and genes are important for shaping microbial communities, and which microbial community members influence the development and activity of the immune system in the host."
