Friday, Feb. 20, 1-4 p.m. Lucy Cuddy Hall

TRiO Day is a nationally organized event at colleges and universities across the country. During the event, TRiO programs come together to offer thanks to the communities that support them.

Please join us for an afternoon of refreshments, entertainment and presentations in celebration of these integral programs at UAA. In addition to Anchorage and Alaskan dignitaries, we welcome and hope to see members of the greater Anchorage community in attendance. It is through the community's support that we continue to assist thousands of Alaskans with transforming their educational dreams into reality.

About TRiO: TRiO programs are important to the greater Anchorage community as they offer Anchorage residents educational services as well as increased access to higher education. These services include: assistance with applying for college admissions and financial aid, individual tutoring, educational and career advising, as well as mentoring and professional development. More than 1,500 colleges, universities and community agencies serve approximately 789,000 young people and adults through TRiO programs across the country. TRiO programs have been providing valuable support services to help moderate-income families navigate the educational pipeline towards college for fifty years.

More than 1,700 Alaskans, ranging from middle school students to adults, benefit from the services offered through this invaluable resource annually. UAA began offering TRiO programs in the early 1970s. UAA's TRiO programs provide support for Alaskan students of all ages. According to Kim Patterson, director of Student Support Services, "The strength of TRiO programs lies in the overlapping continuum of support and, most importantly, in the caring professionals working with first generation populations at the grassroots level to impart vision for postsecondary education, to equip them with the skills needed to master higher education content and to help them complete a program of postsecondary education."

UAA's TRiO programs consist of the following:

  • Educational Talent Search - ETS provides Anchorage middle and high school students with tutoring support, mentoring, and assistance applying for both college admissions and financial aid.
  • Student Support Services - SSS provides currently enrolled UAA students with tutoring, technology, tuition support, assistance with applying for financial aid, peer mentoring and first-year advising.
  • Educational Opportunity Center - EOC assists adults ages 19 and older who are interested in postsecondary education. EOC provides information on and assistance with college research, admissions and financial aid options.
