March 13–17, 2015: Alaska Board of Game meets in the Student Union

by Michelle Saport  |

The Alaska Board of Game (board) will meet March 13-17 in the UAA Student Union to consider public and agency proposals for changes to hunting and trapping regulations. Faculty and students are encouraged to visit the meeting to observe the process for changing state regulations for hunting and trapping.

The board will consider nearly 70 proposals seeking changes to hunting and trapping regulations for the Southcentral Region, which includes the Kenai Peninsula, Kodiak Island and areas surrounding Anchorage and Cordova (Game Management Units 6, 7, 8, 14C and 15). Proposals for the meeting have been submitted by the Department of Fish and Game and other agencies, local fish and game advisory committees, and the public.

Issues to be addressed within Southcentral include: hunting and trapping seasons; bag limits; methods and means; permit conditions and procedures; intensive management; and restricted areas for hunting and trapping. The board will also address issues outside the region, including caribou and sheep hunting in the Arctic Region (Proposals 202 and 203); changes to sheep hunting regulations statewide (Proposals 207 and 208); and reporting requirements for the Copper Basin Community Subsistence Hunt (Proposal 71). All proposals to be considered by the board, and all meeting materials are available at the meeting website.

The board's agenda for Friday, March 13, will begin with state and federal agency reports, followed by consideration of a petition requesting an emergency closure for taking wolves on state lands in Unit 20, near Denali National Park. The board will then hear oral reports on specific topics for the Southcentral Region. Following oral reports, the board will take public testimony before making decision on proposals. Proposals deliberations will be occurring on Monday and Tuesday.
