Arctic Council Chairmanship passes to USA: Live webcast at UAA

by Michelle Saport  |

On April 24, the United States of America will take over the two-year Chairmanship of the Arctic Council. The UAA campus community is invited to view (via webcast) the Arctic Council Ministerial meeting to witness the passing of the gavel from Canada to the U.S. Friday, April 24, at 9:45 a.m. in UAA Fine Arts Building, Room 117. Former UAA Chancellor and current Chair of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission Fran Ulmer will give opening remarks.

Alaska plays a large role in the Arctic, and the United States is an active and influential member of the Arctic Council, the premier forum for Arctic diplomacy. Secretary of State John Kerry represented the United States at the Arctic Council Ministerial meeting in Kiruna, Sweden, which marked the end of Sweden's two-year Chairmanship of the Council and the beginning of the Canadian Chairmanship.

Please plan to attend the webcast of this historic event.

Further information regarding the U.S. Department of State is available at www.state.gov/arctic.

Note: Those unable to view the webcast at UAA, may also stream it live at the Arctic Council website.
