Summer 2015: Food preservation classes offered

Learn to preserve summer's bounty with classes from the Cooperative Extension Service. All classes will run 5:30-10 p.m. All classes will be held at Viking Hall (8141 Briarwood St., Anchorage, AK).

July 8: Freezing and Drying ($35) Learn what makes these preservation methods successful (or not so successful). Discover how easy it is to make healthy, kid-friendly fruit leather from fruit purees or your local berries.

July 15: Canning and Smoking Fish ($40) Learn how to use a pressure canner for preserving fresh, frozen or smoked fish. Learn steps in smoking fish.

August 19: Pickles and Sauerkraut ($40) Learn how to make pickled vegetables and exotic apple chutney. You will "start" some sauerkraut as well as learn some of the science of fermentation.

Register online. Cash or check registrations can be accepted in the Anchorage District Extension Office at 1675 C Street, #110. Class size is limited and preregistration is required. Online registration for each class will close at 5 p.m. the day prior to the scheduled class. Classes require a minimum of 10 people-register early to ensure sufficient enrollment.
