Remembering Darrellene Myers, longtime executive assistant to UA President

by Michelle Saport  |

A note from UA President Jim Johnsen: "It is with great sadness I share the news that longtime executive assistant to the president Darrellene Myers recently passed away. She retired in 2003 under President Mark Hamilton, who presented her with the President's Medal of Excellence for her exceptional service to the university.

Myers served in the office of the president for 35 years providing support, guidance and service to ten University of Alaska presidents and 82 Regents. Few university employees have worked so closely with so many influential people in the university system.

Myers was first hired by the university as secretary for the vice president of academic affairs. She moved to the university president's office after then President William R. Wood's longtime confidential secretary retired. She was highly respected for her wise counsel, grace, gift with words and for her discretion.

Darrellene was an amazing lady, friend and dedicated member of the university community. I hope you will join me in offering support and condolences to her family and friends.

There will be a celebration of life hosted at the University House (formerly referred to as the President's Residence). Details are still being developed, we will share more information when it is available, including where cards of condolence may be sent.

For any of you who may be struggling with this loss, please remember that the university offers its employees counseling resources through our Employee Assistance Program. You can call 1-866-465-8934, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Employees may also contact the EAP at guidanceresources.com and enter the company web ID: GC5901Q. First-time users will need to create an account. Please don't hesitate to seek help if you need it.

My deepest condolences to Darrellene's family, and to all who loved and worked with her. I certainly was among them."
