Rev. Dr. Jamie Washington will speak on "Training Staff to Respond to Racial Climate Challenges" in this PaperClip Communications webinar sponsored by UAA Student Life & Leadership.

How do we train professional and para-professional staff to engage and respond to issues of diversity and inclusion, in a time when race relations are so charged on campus? This question continues to plague many campus professionals as they seek to encourage respectful dialogue and engagement. Rev. Dr. Jamie Washington will share his insights and expertise during this webinar.

  • What support do your professional staff members need in order to ensure they can successfully support students?
  • What components are needed in your training efforts for professional staff? For para-professional staff?
  • How do your staff members respond swiftly when incidents do occur? What do you do to rebuild trust? To allow controversy with civility?

We're at a crossroads in the area of civility and conduct within higher education. Our expert presenter, Rev. Dr. Jamie Washington, will provide strategies for training your professional and para-professional staff so you can best meet their needs, as well as the needs of your diverse student body. You'll be able to educate on what constitutes racist speech and action, respond to incidents swiftly and effectively when they do occur, and build a community based on civility and trust.

As a result of this webinar, you will take away:

  • The components of successful training efforts for professional and para-professional staff-educate your staff members on these hotbed issues so they have the confidence and skills to respond to students with respect and civility.
  • Strategies for offering opportunities for intersection among students of different backgrounds on campus-and how you can help majority staff and students on campus understand that diversity is a topic that pertains to everyone.
  • A framework for response, so you can avoid making broad-sweeping decisions that have negative consequences.
  • Effective tools for educating students and staff on how they can be engaged citizens on topics of social justice.
