CCEL announces recipient of 2016 Dr. Alex Hills Engineering and Civic Engagement Award

The Center for Community Engagement and Learning (CCEL) is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2016 Dr. Alex Hills Engineering and Civic Engagement Award.

Isaac Yep, a UAA Mechanical Engineering undergraduate student, has been selected for the award and will be working with faculty advisor Jeff Hoffman, associate professor of mechanical engineering.

Isaac's project will include building a prototype STEM educational instrument. This interactive gear board device will allow a hands-on learning experience for middle and high-school students and an opportunity to demonstrate real-world applications of math and science skills. The prototype also has the potential to be implemented with STEM-oriented curriculum and activities in collaboration with local community partners like ANSEP.

The Dr. Alex Hills Engineering and Civic Engagement Award encourages UAA Engineering undergraduates to use their engineering knowledge and practice for the benefit of society. For this $2,500 award, student(s) conduct a community-engaged learning project that solves engineering and technology-based problems in partnership with a local organization, under the supervision of an engineering faculty member.
