March 1, 2016: Spread the Word to End the Word

Wednesday, March 1, 12-1:30 p.m. Student Union, Lyla Richards Conference Room

Spread the Word to End the Word is an ongoing effort by Special Olympics and the Best Buddies initiative to raise awareness of the hurtful and derogatory use of the "R-word" (retard or retarded), and its negative impact on individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families. On March 1, the UAA student chapter of American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD) will host a Spread the Word to End the Word event to bring this national effort to the UAA community.

In this lunch-and-learning event for students in health-related fields, come learn how you can work better with and improve the health outcomes for people that experience intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). After a brief video, a self-advocate with IDD will share her experiences. Free pizza will be served for all attendees. Throughout the event, a pledge will be available for people to sign to stop saying the "R-word" as a starting point toward creating more accepting attitudes and communities for all people. Language affects attitudes. Attitudes impact action. Please join us to Spread the Word to End the Word!

AADMD is a national organization that actively encourages health care students, faculty and professionals to enhance their knowledge in the care of individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. The UAA chapter of AADMD is continuing to seek new members to join this important effort.
