Spring 2016: Take a walk on the wild side with Alaska Master Naturalist Program

Take a walk on the wild side with the Alaska Master Naturalist Program. This certification course offers teachers and non-formal educators skills in outdoor classroom activities, practice on outdoor naturalist techniques and a fun cohort of folks to practice place-based environmental education with at the Eagle River Nature Center. Three CEUs will be available to teachers who complete the 45 hours of hands-on workshops this spring. For more information, contact Kay Shoemaker at kwshoemaker@alaska.edu or (907) 786-6345.

Early bird registration discount is available through March 15, 2016. Courses run for two to three days each month, from March through June.

Individual course registration begins after March 15. Three-hour courses are $45 and six-hour courses are $90. Registration coming soon at bit.ly/ces-workshops or call (907) 786-6300.

Alaska Master Naturalist schedule (all classes at Eagle River Nature Center): Exploring Alaska's Landscapes Tuesday-Wednesday, March 29-30, 6-9 p.m. Day 1: Geology, climate and weather (3 hours) Day 2: Glaciers, soils, permafrost (3 hours)

Alaska Water and Aquatic Ecosystems Saturday-Sunday, April 23-24, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Day 1: Watersheds, water cycle, salmon, estuaries (6 hours) Day 2: Aquatic macroinvertebrates, water quality, marine and freshwater ecosystems (6 hours)

Exploring Alaska Animals Tuesday-Wednesday, May 10-11, 6-9 p.m. Day 1: Mammals (3 hours) Day 2: Birds, amphibians and insects (3 hours)

Exploring Alaska Plants Saturday-Sunday, May 21-22, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Day 1: Alaska's native plants and forest ecology (6 hours) Day 2: Medicinal plants and traditional use, invasive species (6 hours)

Ecoregions and Climate Change Tuesday-Thursday, June 14-16, 6-9 p.m. Day 1: Alaska's ecoregions (3 hours) Day 2: Alaska's Native peoples and traditional ecological knowledge (3 hours) Day 3: Climate change and Alaska (3 hours)
