Hundreds of youth and adults gear up to celebrate TRIO Day

20160217-trio-dayOn Friday, Feb. 19, the University of Alaska Anchorage will join together with other universities from across the country to celebrate TRIO Day, a national celebration where three programs (Educational Talent Search, Student Support Services and Educational Opportunity Center) come together to honor, reflect and act around increased access to higher education for disadvantaged students.

At the UAA celebration, youth and adults from the TRIO programs will come together in the Student Union to share how TRIO has helped them achieve their higher education goals. Community leaders attending and participating in a roundtable discussion will be: Ed Graff (Anchorage School District Superintendent), George Martinez (special assistant to Mayor Ethan Berkowitz) and Bruce Schultz (UAA Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs). Also in attendance will be TRIO students from West High School, East High School, Bartlett High School, Clark Middle School, Romig Middle School, Begich Middle School and Wendler Middle School, plus UAA students and Anchorage community members involved with TRIO.

TRIO Day will take place in the Student Union on Friday, Feb. 19, from 1 to 4 p.m. The schedule is as follows.

1-1:30 p.m. - Reception and hors d'ouevres 1:3-2:30 p.m. - Program and speakers

  • Reading of the TRIO Day Proclamation: Office of the Mayor
  • History of TRIO: Clark Middle School Performers
  • TRIO program introductions: Adán Acuña
  • Comments regarding TRIO: Community dignitaries
  • Student speakers: Mary Scates, Reth Duir and New Year Solomona
  • Keynote speaker: George Martinez, special assistant to Mayor Ethan Berkowitz for education, youth development, diversity and economic development
  • Emcee: Adán Acuña

2:30-4 p.m. - TRIO service project

  • Roundtable discussion with community leaders
