20160408-clark-middle-leadership-fellows-juniorsClark Middle School students who participated in UAA's College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP) and Clark Middle School Leadership Fellows Junior program completed an academic year-long leadership development program this month.

To celebrate, students and parents attended a mini-conference at Clark Middle School on Saturday April 2. The mini-conference culminated with an awards ceremony.

Awards included more than 12 Frontier Tutoring SAT® or ACT Prep scholarships worth almost $12,000. Frontier Tutoring, Northrim Bank and CBPP faculty and staff donated the scholarships.

Students attended 10 leadership development sessions that emphasized negotiations, decision-making, public speaking, linguistics and leadership qualities. The sessions were facilitated by CBPP faculty, UAA staff, and CBPP Leadership Fellows.

"The program is a testament to the impact we can have on today's youth and a significant opportunity to strengthen connections among UAA CBPP, local businesses, Clark Middle School, and the Mountain View community, but more importantly to make a real difference in a youth's life," said Program Director Dr. Terry Nelson. "I am thrilled to have support from Frontier Tutoring and Northrim Bank this year."

The College of Business and Public Policy/Clark Middle School Leadership Fellows Junior program is a youth leadership development program for sixth through eighth-grade students. The program is designed to develop and nurture a leadership mindset in youths that will facilitate young leaders in obtaining scholarships, achieving admission to college, performing successfully in college life, excelling in the work environment, and lastly, being a productive citizen in their community.

The Leadership Fellows program prepares UAA College of Business and Public Policy students to be future leaders who meet the needs of Alaska organizations through leadership, professional development programs and mentoring. Learn more at www.uaa.alaska.edu/cbpp.
