Help responders easily find you during an emergency

by Michelle Saport  |

If you need to call 911 or UPD from a campus telephone for an emergency, will responders be able to find you? UAA's Emergency Manager Ron Swartz wants you to know that your caller ID location needs to be set by IT Services, and if you have moved your phone from one building to another recently, the emergency response system may not know where you really are! Contact IT Services to have your phone reset. In any case, be ready to give emergency call takers your street address.

Here's some guidance from Information Technology Services:

Need to move a telephone on campus? While it is relatively easy to relocate a telephone, there are some very important steps that need to be taken before you unplug your device and relocate it. All telephones are programmed with specific information related to the location of the device, such as building and room number. This information is of critical importance for health and safety factors. Before relocating a device to a new location, please contact the IT Call Center via phone at (907) 786-4646 or by email at callcenter@uaa.alaska.edu. Please have the following information ready for the technician (or include it in your email message):

Telephone number Current building/room location New location (where you want to relocate the device)

We encourage departments to submit a list of all department phone numbers with building/room location to maintain an accurate inventory in our system. We want to ensure emergency responders are directed to the correct building and room for health and safety efforts.
