The vital role of veterans at UAA (plus, meet 47 Seawolves who served)

Kodiak has the Coast Guard. Fairbanks has the Air Force. There are White Alice radio walls scattered on the hills in Nome and the outposts of Adak. Really, wherever you look, the military has a footprint in Alaska. And the same is true at UAA, which was named a military-friendly school by Victory Media for the past seven years.

Let's start with some stats. Did you know Alaska has the highest percentage of veterans per capita? Or that Alaska-where roughly 1 in 10 residents served in the military-also boasts the highest share of women among its veteran population?

Alaska can likewise claim the highest relative share of young veterans. As the Washington Post wrote in 2014, "Young veterans, which we define as those aged 20 to 34, have congregated in Alaska..."

It's only fitting, then, that the state's largest university has an equally strong veteran presence (okay, one more: nearly 3,000 veterans enrolled for a class in the 2015-2016 school year).

Meet a few of the Seawolf alumni who served.

In 2010 and 2014, we asked for active-duty photos from all UAA-affiliated folks. To learn more about these grads, check out the original 2010 and 2014 stories. We thank you for your service, and your contributions to UAA.
