Ravens' Roost Cohousing with Terri Pauls Thursday, Feb. 2, 5-6:30 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore

The residents of Ravens' Roost Cohousing have just moved in to their private, full-featured homes. Cohousing encourages neighbors to get to know each other while maintaining personal privacy.

Members of Ravens' Roost and co-founder Terri Pauls will discuss the benefits of collaborative living and discuss how Anchorage's first cohousing neighborhood came together.

There is free parking for this event in the South Lot, Sports Complex NW Lot, West Campus Central Lot and Sports Campus West Lot.

Dr. Erin Hicks presents 'Supermassive Black Holes in Active Galactic Nuclei' Monday, Feb. 6, 5-7 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore

Erin Hicks, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the UAA Physics & Astronomy Department and director of the UAA Planetarium & Visualization Theater. Dr. Hicks' research focuses on galaxy evolution and the role that supermassive black holes play in shaping galaxies into what we see today.

Key to explaining the significance of supermassive black holes is understanding active galactic nuclei, galaxies in which a black hole is actively consuming the surrounding gas and dust. Through studying these galaxies, Hicks aims to solve the mystery of how the evolution of a black hole and its galaxy are intertwined.

At this event, Hicks will discuss our current understanding of the importance of supermassive black holes in the evolution of galaxies and will highlight our changing view of black holes thanks to the work of Dr. Stephen Hawking.

This event is in honor of Stephen Hawking's 75th birthday.

Everyone is welcome to attend this event. There is free parking for this event in the South Lot, Sports Complex NW Lot, West Campus Central Lot and Sports Campus West Lot.
