Feb. 16, 2017: UAA professor Diane Hirshberg presents lecture on boarding schools in Alaska

Diane Hirshberg, Ph.D., professor of education policy and director of the Center for Alaska Education Policy Research at UAA, will give a lecture on "Boarding Schools in Alaska" at the Anchorage Museum, Thursday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m.

Hirshberg will provide an overview of the history of boarding schools in Alaska, from the early experiments in the 1920s through the 1960s and 1970s (when attendance at these institutions was at its highest) to today. She will discuss the outcomes of these schools, including impacts on students and communities, and the implications for contemporary discussions around residential schooling in Alaska.
