Pat Tomco, Ph.D., candidate for assistant professor of organic chemistry at UAA, will present a free, public seminar on Friday, March 3, 11 a.m.-noon in the ConocoPhillips Integrated Science Building, Room 105A. The seminar is titled, "Field and laboratory-based investigations of agrochemical toxicology, integrated pest management, and oil spill response/remediation strategies in Alaska."

Cold temperatures and long, dark winters play an important role in driving the transformation pathways and fate processes of agrochemicals and petrochemicals in the Alaska environment. This talk will focus on recent efforts aimed at developing novel quantitation methods of several different classes of these compounds, linking degradation pathways with toxicological response, and developing strategies for facilitating biodegradation of accumulated residues in northern systems. Data from these studies (many of which involve UAA students) are utilized by state and federal agencies in developing integrated management strategies and contingency plans for the state with broad-reaching applications for other Arctic and sub-Arctic regions.
