Annie Route to retire as director of Student Life & Leadership

Please join Student Affairs in thanking Annie Route, director of Student Life & Leadership, for her 31 years of service to UAA. She will retire on June 30.
Annie first came to Alaska in 1985 and joined UAA as a career counselor in 1986. A year later she accepted the additional role of UAA college representative, flying out to rural Alaska and sleeping on gym floors, enthusiastically promoting the adventure of UAA. Annie went on to serve as the campus center manager, student activities coordinator and, for the past 18 years, as the director of Student Life and Leadership (formerly known as Campus Life, formerly known as Student Union Programs and Services).
During her time at UAA, Annie has been instrumental in establishing and maintaining valued traditions. She helped to build the Chancellor's Martin Luther King Appreciation program, Campus Kick-Off, Student Showcase, and the Concert Board. She's organized and run the UAA Craft Fair too many years to count and is inspired each semester working with student graduates at Commencement.
Throughout her career, Annie has been active in student affairs organizations, including the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) and the Association of College Unions International (ACUI). Annie has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the 1998 UAA Outstanding Contribution to Students Award, the 2002 NACA Outstanding Service Citation and the 2009 Staff Make Students Count Award from University of Alaska President Mark Hamilton.
In addition to her service within student affairs, Annie is an American Sign Language instructor and advisor for the UAA ASL Club. In 2010 and 2014, she was recognized as Student Club Advisor of the Year.
Following her retirement, Annie plans on continuing to teach ASL and enjoying life in Anchorage.
Her enthusiasm, constant support of students and guidance will be greatly missed. Please join us in wishing Annie all the best in her new adventures.
