'Kiuguyat: The Northern Lights' with UAA Astronomer Travis Rector, Ph.D. Friday, April 28, 6:30 p.m. Tickets / Preview
Alaska's Far North is cloaked in darkness for much of the Arctic winter season. For Iñupiat people who live in this remote landscape, the beautiful dancing lights known as the northern lights are a welcome sight. What are the northern lights? How did they get there? What meaning do they hold for those who live beneath their splendor? This 25-minute full-dome video showcases the lights through stunning time-lapse photography and introduces the audience to Iñupiat elders and residents of all ages as they share traditional stories, songs, personal experiences and generational knowledge related to the lights. Animated visualizations depict the physical science processes that produce this fascinating high latitude phenomenon.
'Coloring the Universe' with UAA Astronomer Travis Rector, Ph.D. Friday, April 28, 8 p.m. Tickets / Preview
Everyone loves astronomy pictures, but have you ever wondered if they are real? Do they show objects as they really look? How they are made? In a special all-live presentation, UAA Astronomer Travis Rector answers all these questions and more. Over the last 20 years, Dr. Rector has been privileged to make more than 200 color pictures with some of the world's largest and most powerful telescopes, including those at Kitt Peak National Observatory, Gemini Observatory and even the Hubble Space Telescope. He will share a behind-the-scenes look at what it's like to use these telescopes and how pictures are made from the images they collect. He will use the planetarium to share with you stories from his book, Coloring the Universe.
