Understanding how HIPAA applies to UAA Monday, June 26, 1-3:30 p.m. UAA/APU Consortium Library, Room 307 and various remote locations

Representatives from Aegis Ethics and Compliance Center LLC will provide a training session in Anchorage and via video-conference on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This training is for all University of Alaska administrators, staff, faculty and IT professionals who want to know more about how HIPAA applies to University of Alaska. (Download the event flier.)

This training will provide information to help attendees:

  • Understand the definition of "covered entity" under HIPAA.
  • Assess whether activities related to health care or research qualify as "covered entities" under the HIPAA rules.
  • Understand operational, administrative, and security policies and procedures that are required for compliance.
  • Determine when to enter into Business Associate Agreements with another "covered entity."
  • Develop best practices for collection, processing, storage or transmission of Protected Health Information for non-covered entities.
  • Understand the guidelines for acceptable internal use of health information.
