Oct. 4, 2017: Nancy Lord presents her new book, pH: A Novel

Fantasy authors M. Cote Warner, author of The Stratus Estate, and L.S. Goulet, author of Sword of Dragonblood, read and discuss their books Monday, Oct. 2, 5-7 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore, Loft

M. Cote Warner's The Stratus Estate follows Phillip Stratus who lives in the very distant, utopian future with his large, quirky, adoptive family, all of whom are powerhouse players in the City of Tarkenwore. His friend is Vive Tarkenwore, the conceptual child of Queen Nacthelian and King Hasamelis-very tall supernatural beings who have ruled Earth for almost 2,000 years.

In L.S. Goulet's Sword of Dragonblood, when eighth-grader Darrel Sak realizes his lifelong nightmares are real, and that nothing is as it seems, he teams up with Maisy on a quest to save his dad from Proteus Shyfte, who plans to dominate the magical world of Shaemaaie.

M. Cote Warner was born and raised in Anchorage. She graduated from the University of Hawai'i at Hilo where she began to create the world of Tarkenwore featured in The Stratus Estate. Returning to Anchorage, she pursued a career in human services. However, in 2010, she was diagnosed with a devastating chronic illness. Her first novel, The Stratus Estate, is a re-introduction to a world of healthy, functional people.

L.S. Goulet lives in Alaska with her family. During the extra-long days of summer, she writes on her deck. In the dark, cold winters she wraps in a quilt by the fire, dreams and writes some more, while her dogs sleep at her side and feet.

Shuvajit Bhattacharya presents 'Application of Predictive Data Analytics for Hydrocarbon Exploration' Tuesday, Oct. 3, 5:30-7 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore, Loft

Shuvajit Bhattacharya, Ph.D., teaches in the Department of Geological Sciences at UAA. His current research areas are in energy geosciences, geophysics, petrophysics and data analytics. At this event, Bhattacharya will discuss how predictive data analytics, including data mining and machine learning, can be used to better understand subsurface geology and the exploration of energy resources.

Nancy Lord presents her new book, pH: A Novel, with Darcy Dugan, director of Alaska Ocean Acidification Network Wednesday, Oct. 4, 5-7 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore, Loft

Nancy Lord's new book, pH: A Novel, investigates what happens when toxic academic forces collide with scientific inquiry and performance art. A surprisingly entertaining story, pH: A Novel involves marine scientists working on ocean warming and acidification issues while getting into conflict with one another.

Nancy Lord was Alaska writer Laureate from 2008-2010. She is a faculty member of the Low-Residency M.F.A Program in Creative Writing at UAA and teaches at the UAA Kachemak Bay Campus. She is also the author of numerous books, including Beluga Days, Fishcamp and Early Warming.

Darcy Dugan is director of Alaska Ocean Acidification Network. She has worked with scientists to ensure ocean data and information is available for safe marine operations, environmental stewardship and decision-making. Dugan received a bachelor's degree from Stanford University in the earth systems program, and a master's of environmental science at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.

This event will highlight how the science of ocean acidification can be communicated effectively to the public and how connections between the arts and sciences can illuminate the natural world.

Author Gina Apostol presents Gun Dealers' Daughter Friday, Oct. 13, 1-2:30 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore, Loft

Author Gina Apostol will read from her novel Gun Dealers' Daughter, set in martial law Philippines. She'll explore links between novel writing and history, and between our contemporary times and our past (including links between U.S. and Philippine history). She will welcome questions from the audience.

Gina Apostol's book Gun Dealers' Daughter won the 2013 PEN/Open Book Award and was shortlisted for the 2014 William Saroyan International Prize. Author of three books, many of her essays and stories have appeared in The New York Times, Los Angeles Review of Books, Foreign Policy, Gettysburg Review and Massachusetts Review.

Gina Apostol was raised in Tacloban, Philippines, and currently lives in New York City and Western Massachusetts.
