Dear UAA Community,

I am pleased to announce Dr. Karen Markel has been named the new dean of the UAA College of Business and Public Policy following a nationwide search. She will join CBPP this coming June, succeeding Dr. Bogdan Hoanca, who has served as the college's interim dean since March 2017.

Dr. Markel is a faculty member at Oakland University's School of Business Administration located in Rochester, Michigan. She currently serves as chair of the Department of Marketing and Management. In this role she works collaboratively with colleagues, leading a team of 40 full- and part-time faculty in the areas of management, marketing, law, strategy, international business and entrepreneurship. She has focused on more closely aligning faculty activities with new AACSB standards, implementing a new faculty merit system and developing a mentoring program to support junior faculty.

Dr. Markel's contributions also include directing and streamlining the school's undergraduate business programs, which include advising, career services and honors programming. She championed alumni engagement and advisory board development activities, creating a complementary fundraising plan that resulted in the development of several new student scholarships. She has also coordinated program delivery at main and satellite campuses and promoted the integration of relevant business courses into curricula for nonbusiness programs.

Her research and teaching interests include organizational change management and human resource management, specifically the management of diversity. Her most recent research focused on the inclusion of people with autism spectrum disorder in the workplace.

Dr. Markel has presented her research at numerous conferences worldwide and published in journals such as The Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Business Ethics and Human Relations. She holds a bachelor's degree in business from Washington University in St. Louis, a master's degree in sociology from SUNY Buffalo and a doctoral degree in human resource management from Michigan State University. She is also senior certified by the Society for Human Resource Management and the Human Resource Certification Institute.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Markel to the UAA community.

Sincerely, Duane Hrncir Interim Provost
