Stay safe during and after an earthquake

by Michelle Saport  |

The recent earthquake serves as a good reminder that there are things we can do to be safe. The UAA Office of Emergency Management teaches that in the U.S. a majority of injuries from earthquakes have been from falling debris. When you feel the event start, drop to the floor and get under a sturdy table or desk. Hold on to that piece of furniture, as it may move during the earthquake. Remember: drop, cover, and hold on!

Finally, if you're in a coastal area outside the Anchorage area, don't wait for a tsunami warning siren but instead immediately go to higher ground.
