Open forums with Alaska College of Education executive dean finalists resume March 7

The university is pleased to announce two finalists for the position of Executive Dean for the Alaska College of Education, Dr. Steve Atwater and Dr. Kathryn Hildebrand. Both candidates will visit UAA, UAS and UAF to meet with College of Education faculty and staff, university administrators and any interested parties.

The interview schedule includes open forums at all three campuses. See below for details on the Anchorage forums. Each candidate will also deliver a 45-minute public presentation, followed by Q-and-A, as part of their visit to the UAS campus in Juneau (for those not in Alaska's capital city, the presentation will be streamed live at UATV).

Dr. Steve Atwater (Curriculum Vitae) Current position: Interim Dean, UAF School of Education

Anchorage open forum: Tuesday, Feb. 20, 3:30-4:30 p.m. UAA/APU Consortium Library, Room 307

Public presentation: Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2:30-3:30 p.m. UAS - Juneau | Live on UATV

Atwater joined the University of Alaska in November 2014 after five years as superintendent of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, where he was named Alaska's 2013 Superintendent of the Year. Prior to his work for KPBSD, Atwater taught secondary education and served consecutively as head teacher, curriculum coordinator and superintendent for the Lake & Peninsula School District in King Salmon, Alaska. Atwater's experience with the Alaska education system extends to his own professional training, as he earned both his master's in education and his doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Dr. Kathryn Hildebrand (Curriculum Vitae) Current position: Professor, Department of Teacher Education, Troy University College of Education

Hildebrand's 27 years in higher education has been at rural institutions having a student-centered focus. She served for ten years as an administrator at the college or institutional level. These administrative positions included serving as the dean of the College of Education at Troy University, as well as serving as assistant dean of the College of Education, and later as the assistant vice provost at Northern Arizona University. While serving as assistant vice provost, she was also interim director of the Center for Science Teaching and Learning for one year. Prior to her administrative positions, Hildebrand was a faculty member and the program director of the Health and Physical Education major, and served as the assistant department chair of the Department of Health Sciences at Northern Arizona University.
