March 29: Exploring for inspiration with the 'Under the Pole' teamAn Evening of Exploration: Under the Pole Thursday, March 29, 6:30 p.m. Wendy Williamson Auditorium

Join us for an exclusive, one-night event, to meet Ghislain Bardout, the "Under the Pole" expedition team leader. In 2010 divers Ghislain Bardout and Emmanuelle Périé-Bardout took their Siberian husky, Kayak, to the North Pole to explore the ecosystems beneath the ice. In 2018, their work brought them to our very own Sitka, Alaska.

"People said it wasn't possible, but we believed it was," says Périé-Bardout. Their trip resulted has resulted in films, a book and plenty of academic research. Now they will be here joining us at UAA for one night only to show us their journey under the ice.

This summer their team started the third part of the project: a three-year excursion to nearly every latitude on Earth. Beginning in France they traveled past Greenland, through the Arctic and into Sitka, Alaska. From Alaska they will be departing to French Polynesia, past the tip of South America, on to Antarctica, and then up north through the Atlantic back to Europe-a nearly 50,000-mile journey.

UTP specializes in Arctic Submarine Exploration. Before they leave Alaska, they will be available one-night only at UAA's Wendy Williamson Auditorium for an exclusive screening of their favorite film-work from their journey. This exclusive screening will be on Thursday, March 29.

  • 6:30 p.m. - Doors open for a meet-and-greet with the team
  • 7 p.m. - Film screening begins
  • 8:30 p.m. - Q&A Session with Ghislain Bardout

Don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore the depths of our Arctic oceans in an exclusive screening with this world-record setting couple.
