UAA and ASD to open second Alaska Middle College School

by Samuel Gingerich, UAA Interim Chancellor  |

Dear UAA Community,

The Alaska Middle College is a partnership between UAA and the Anchorage School District (ASD). The middle college offers Alaska high school students the opportunity to earn college credit while also obtaining their high school diploma.

Based on the success of the Alaska Middle College School currently located at the Chugiak-Eagle River Campus, I am pleased to share that we plan to expand the middle college. This fall, we will open a second location on the UAA Main Campus in partnership with ASD, with designated classrooms and offices housed in the Administrative/Humanities Building. We anticipate this location will serve approximately 100 students.

The middle college provides a number of benefits, including the opportunity for ASD high school students to earn college credits at virtually no cost to them or their families. College-ready students can even earn their associate degree in a supportive environment with resources designed to help them succeed. The middle college also provides a more direct pathway to the Alaska job market, making it possible for students to start their careers sooner.

This is just one of many endeavors UAA has undertaken to help high school students seamlessly transition to college. This fall, ANSEP will open its Acceleration Academy (UAA), a full-time program located on the UAA Main Campus in partnership with ASD and also within the Alaska Middle College School.

These partnerships are just one way UAA contributes to student success in our community and to a college-going culture in our state.

Sincerely,
Samuel B. Gingerich
UAA Interim Chancellor
