C-SPAN, the Washington, D.C.-based public affairs network, in coordination with GCI, is visiting Alaska June 18-27. The trip is the network's first extended visit to the state in 22 years, as part of the its 14-month 50 Capitals Tour. The two companies have worked together to bring the 45-foot C-SPAN Bus to Juneau, Haines, Fairbanks and Anchorage.
In addition to hosting community events, C-SPAN will produce public affairs programming, including segments for its ongoing C-SPAN Cities Tour. That programming will showcase a variety of Alaska venues, public officials, non-fiction authors and local historians on all three C-SPAN networks during the July 21-22 weekend.
UAA students, staff and faculty, as well as local community members, can tour the bus and talk to members of the C-SPAN team on Wednesday, June 27, from 10 a.m. to noon. The bus will be parked off Seawolf Drive in the Allied Health Sciences Building lot near the east entrance to Rasmuson Hall. The bus features educational activities for kids and adults alike, including on-board interactive tablets and stations.
The C-SPAN Bus, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, embarked on the 50 Capitals Tour in September 2017 to engage students, community members and elected officials in every state by talking with residents about issues important to them for C-SPAN's social media campaign, Voices from the States. The C-SPAN Bus visit to the state Capitol in Juneau is the 38th capital city visit along the tour. In Alaska, C-SPAN programming is provided by GCI as a commercial-free public service and can be seen on channel 16; C-SPAN2.
