The University of Alaska Anchorage College of Health (COH) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Janet Johnston as the director of the newly established COH Division of Health Sciences and Applied Health Research (DHSAHR). This new division is the result of the restructure and merger of the Department of Health Sciences and the Institute of Circumpolar Health Studies. It integrates complementary research and academic functions into a single unit, broadening the academic and research opportunities for faculty and students, and implements more efficient and consistent services for students, staff and faculty.

Dr. Johnston brings the necessary expertise and experience required to lead this new Division of Health Sciences and Applied Health Research. Most recently, she served as the interim director for the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies. She is an associate professor of epidemiology with more than 15 years of experience as a research epidemiologist and biostatistician. Dr. Johnston's research interests include housing and homelessness, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorders (FASD) prevention, women's health and health disparities.

Before joining UAA in 2010, Dr. Johnston served as a senior epidemiologist and health research director at the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium. She has also served as the Clinical Services supervisor for the Municipality of Anchorage Department of Health and Human Services. She was on faculty with the University of Pittsburgh Epidemiology Data Center where she served as co-Principal Investigator for the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) Coordinating Center.

Outside of work, she plays violin with the Anchorage Civic Orchestra and enjoys running, reading and watching her sons' sports activities.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Johnston to her new position within the College of Health.
