First look at UAA Theatre's upcoming season

by Michelle Saport  |

The UAA Department of Theatre and Dance is proud to present our 2018-2019 season. From tragedy to comedy, this season is sure to have something for everybody:

Playhouse Creatures  by April de Angelis Oct. 26-Nov. 4, 2018

In 1660, Charles II returned to the throne and decreed that women would - for the first time in more than a century - be allowed to perform on the English stage. The King and many men turned out in droves to be titillated and tantalized by the newest young beauties, but Playhouse Creatures presents a vivacious account of the fight these women faced to be seen as legitimate actors.

New Kid by Dennis Foon Nov. 30-Dec. 1, 2018

Nick, a young boy from the country called "Homeland" moves to Alaska with his family. Nick struggles with his fears of a new culture and being in a place where he is unable to communicate in the language of his fellow students. His frustration is portrayed using a clever theatrical approach: Nick and his family speak English, while all the Alaskans speak gibberish.

In this play the spirit of youth prevails over differences in color and culture. Promoting the message that, in the end, kids are all the same inside.

This production will also be touring local schools

Lysistrata by Aristophanes, translated by Jeffery Henderson March 1-10, 2019

Lysistrata is a bawdy Greek comedy by the ancient playwright Aristophanes, first staged in 411 BCE. It is the comic account of one woman's extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian War, as Lysistrata convinces the women of Greece to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands as a means of forcing the men to negotiate a peace. Contains adult themes, references, and language. May not be suitable for kids.

Betrayal by Harold Pinter April 19-21, 2019

The story of three sides of an adulterous affair that's told in reverse chronological order. Throughout, Pinter charts the incremental deceits and unspoken emotions that led to the ultimate betrayal. Directed by UAA theatre major Paitton Reid.

Frozen by Byrony Lavery April 26-28, 2019

Three characters-a mother whose 10-year-old daughter goes missing, a grieving American academic writing about serial killers and a serial child murderer-intersect over grief, trauma, and murder. Along the way, they pursue the possibility of forgiveness and healing. Directed by UAA theatre major Taran Haynes.
