Reminder: UAA will be closed for 2018-19 Winter Break

by Michelle Saport  |

Dear UAA Community,

UAA will be closed for the winter holiday break beginning Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018, through Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019.

The holidays are Dec. 24, Dec. 25, Dec. 31 and Jan 1. The closure dates are Dec. 26-28. To accomplish the goal of closing the campus throughout this period, all annual-leave-eligible employees must take accrued annual leave, personal holiday or leave without pay (LWOP) Dec. 26-28. In addition, faculty who accrue Faculty Time Off (FTO) must use FTO from Dec. 26 to Dec. 28. A LWOP request form will only be necessary if an employee's accumulated LWOP will exceed 10 days in a calendar year. An employee may use sick leave during the winter closure only upon submission of written evidence of illness or a professional appointment or treatment. This written evidence must be submitted to his or her timesheet approver.

Employees must have the approval of their supervisor to work during the closure, whether they are working on campus or working from home. Granting such permission is authorized provided there is work available during the closure period that is appropriate and timely. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring employees are performing any assigned tasks during this period. Supervision in some form is required, and may include the use of an alternate supervisor, email and/or voicemail confirmation. Supervisors may consult Human Resource Services at 786-4608 if assistance is needed regarding these options.

Supervisors may require certain employees who are necessary for ongoing, mission-critical operations of the university to work on campus during the holiday closure. Employees needing to work on campus during the closure must notify the University Police Department they will be present on campus. All buildings will be locked during the closure. Any employee needing access to UAA buildings must have a key or access device to gain entry. UPD will not open buildings. Please send notices of presence on campus during the closure to police@uaa.alaska.edu or call 786-1120.

Happy Holidays! Ron Kamahele Human Resource Services Director
