CCEL announces 2018 Dr. Alex Hills Engineering and Civic Engagement Award recipient

This year's Dr. Alex Hills Engineering and Civic Engagement Award goes to two UAA undergraduate students. Canyon Lewis (civil engineering) and Claire Lubke (biological sciences) will use the $2,500 award to develop an autonomous aeroponic garden system. The students will work on the project with faculty advisor Todd Petersen, associate professor of electrical engineering.

UAA celebrated the spring Class of 2018 on Sunday, May 6. The ceremony honored the accomplishments of more than 1,200 undergraduate, graduate and professional school students from the Anchorage campus. Together, they join the nearly 1,100 UAA students who graduated in the fall. Congratulations, graduates!

Accounting and management major Yelena Sinyawski has always looked up to law enforcement professionals. Forensic accounting classes at UAA and a recent visit by the IRS’s Adrian Project showed her how an accounting degree can lead to a rewarding career catching bad guys.

The Center for Community Engagement and Learning (CCEL) is pleased to announce Cole Murphy as the recipient of the 2018 Second Bridge Scholarship Award. Cole's project, "Capacity & Services Development at Alaska Seeds of Change,” combines the interest in farming with the mission of empowering and advancing at-risk youth.

Civil engineering and leadership honors grad ready to take on the world

Entering the real world after leaving school can be intimidating, but civil engineering graduate and leadership honors recipient Mohamed Niagne is off to a great start. Mohamed will launch his career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in May 2018, and hopes to use his talents around the world to bring better services to communities while finding safer methods to tap into natural resources.
