Feb. 18, 2019: Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies faculty search public presentation

The Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies is conducting a faculty search, and we would like to invite UAA faculty, students and staff to hear a public presentation from our candidates. The first in this series will take place today. Please see below for additional details.

Centering Alaska in the Circumpolar North Monday, Feb. 18, 11 a.m.-Noon ICHS Conference Room, BOC3, Suite 270 (1901 Bragaw Street)

Dr. Katie Cueva will present findings from Alaska-based research relevant in the circumpolar north, including community-based action research on cancer education with Alaska's tribal health workers and an epidemiologic analysis of the actual causes of death of Alaskans. She will also share visions for a locally-grounded and internationally-collaborative ICHS, including through a second Survey of Living Conditions in the Arctic.

About the speaker Dr. Katie Cueva was born and raised in Alaska. She is interested in culturally appropriate health promotion and healthcare delivery, community-based participatory action research, and health equity. She is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Public Policy and Health at the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER), a CDC/CSTE Applied Epidemiology Fellow in the Alaska Section of Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Associate Faculty at the Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health, and a Fulbright Arctic Initiative Fellow. She currently serves on the executive council of the American Association for Cancer Education, on the board of directors of the Alaska Public Health Association, and on the executive council of the American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian caucus of the American Public Health Association. She has a Master's of Public Health from Johns Hopkins and a dual doctoral degree from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Nutrition and Social and Behavioral Sciences. In her free time, Dr. Cueva enjoys dancing, traveling, and getting outside to play.
