Dear SoEd students in Initial Licensure Programs:

Yesterday, the University of Alaska Board of Regents voted 6-5 to discontinue UAA's initial licensure programs within the School of Ed. I share your disappointment. Nonetheless, UAF and UAS are offering you a path to complete your degree and receive licensure.

The affected programs include:

  • Bachelor of Arts, Elementary Education
  • Post‐Baccalaureate, Elementary Education
  • Master of Arts in Teaching, Secondary Education
  • Bachelor of Arts, Early Childhood Education
  • Post‐Baccalaureate, Early Childhood Education
  • Graduate Certificate, Special Education (initial licensure)
  • M.Ed, Early Childhood Special Education (initial licensure)

Some impacted students may want to choose a different major at UAA. Students who know the major they want to change to should bring a completed Change of Major or Degree Form to an academic advisor in the new department for their new major.

Students who are unsure of what major they want to change to can discuss options and next steps with an advisor at UAA's First Year Student Advising Center, located in Suite 206 of the Professional Studies Building or by phone at 907-786-0338.

You may wish to explore the options listed below:

Students with less than 30 credits or students wanting to explore a new major Valerie Robideaux, Director, First Year Student Advising and Success vbrobideaux@alaska.edu; 907-786-0345
