Important update on UAA School of Education accreditation

by kbolmstead  |

These communications were sent to UAA faculty and staff and UAA School of Education Students on April 1, 2019.

Dear UAA Faculty and Staff,

President Johnsen will post his recommendation about the future of UAA's SoEd publicly on the board of regents website at 5 p.m. today. This recommendation will be considered and voted on by the board of regents at its special meeting on Monday, April 8.

You may access his recommendation here beginning at 5 p.m. today.

Optimal pathways for students to graduation and licensure in the state of Alaska have been stated goals in the statewide administration's consideration of the options. Though this may not go the way we hope, our collective efforts over the last few months have resulted in a strong case for reaccreditation of UAA's SoEd initial licensure programs. I have full confidence in our faculty's ability to achieve reaccreditation, and also faith that the Alaska State Department of Education would continue to find a path to licensure for UAA SoEd graduates.

If the recommendation is not to pursue reaccreditation, students will have many questions that you will be on the front line to answer. I want to provide the below resources for you to refer students to for answers to their questions. If the issues are related to transfer, they should be referred to the call centers so that the information they receive is provided by the institution to which they may transfer.

UAF Call Center: 907-474-6447 or 907-474-6180 UAS Call Center: 907-796-6429

Some impacted students may want to choose a different major at UAA. Students who know the major they want to change to should bring a completed Change of Major or Degree Form to an academic advisor in the new department for their new major. Students who are unsure of what major they want to change to can discuss options and next steps with an advisor at UAA's First Year Student Advising Center, located in suite 206 of the Professional Studies Building or by phone at 907-786-0338.

In advance of its April 8 meeting, the University of Alaska Board of Regents can accept written comments, questions and feedback at this address: ua-bor@alaska.edu

Please know that I appreciate all you have done to support our students during this time of uncertainty. A communication to SoEd students will be sent this afternoon including all of the above-listed resources. We felt it important that you have this information in advance, fully recognizing that UAA students will turn to you first.

Many thanks for your patience as we navigate this situation.

Sincerely,

Cathy Sandeen UAA Chancellor

Dear UAA School of Education (SoEd) Students:

You may access the recommendation here beginning at 5 p.m. today.

Though this may not go the way we hope, we remain committed to providing you the resources you need to understand all your options and to ensure your questions are answered no matter what option you choose.

If the recommendation is not to pursue reaccreditation for initial licensure programs at UAA and/or not to allow advanced programs to pursue accreditation, you will have many questions. Below are call center numbers for UAF and UAS. It is important that if your questions are related to transferring to UAF or UAS that you reach out to the call center at that institution to ensure you are receiving correct and direct information about what is entailed in that process.

UAF Call Center: 907-474-6447 or 907-474-6180 UAS Call Center: 907-796-6429

As current UAA students you may choose a different major at UAA. Students who know the major they want to change to should bring a completed Change of Major or Degree Form to an academic advisor in the new department for their new major. Students who are unsure of what major they want to change to can discuss options and next steps with an advisor at UAA's First Year Student Advising Center, located in suite 206 of the Professional Studies Building, or by phone at 907-786-0338.

In advance of its April 8 meeting, the University of Alaska Board of Regents can accept written comments, questions and feedback at this address: ua-bor@alaska.edu

Faculty and staff within SoEd have also received information about these above-listed resources, so they can provide some assistance to you as well. I hope these resources provide the necessary tools to gather the facts about your options, which are dependent on President Johnsen's recommendation later today and ultimately dependent upon the decision of the board of regents on Monday, April 8.

Sincerely,

Cathy Sandeen UAA Chancellor
