Second annual Democracy & Civic Action Week Sept. 16-21, 2019 Early-bird proposals due July 15, 2019. Final call for proposals due Aug. 15, 2019.

Events explore diverse perspectives about the role of democracy and civic engagement in the United States. Departments, programs and organizations across campus are invited to present a wide-range of activities to engage both campus and community members in reflecting on their rights and responsibilities that are fundamental to creating a civil society.

This year's theme is, "What does it mean to be a good citizen?" Applicants are encouraged to take a broad interpretation of this theme as they develop their proposal.

Interactive events are highly encouraged. Examples of prior events include:

  • Brian Cook's theatre workshop, "Theatre as a Means of Promoting Social and Political Change: An Interactive Workshop Using Boal's Techniques for Community Engagement"
  • Democracy Wall in the Student Union, hosted by Student Life & Leadership
  • "Pizza & the Press: A Conversation with Local Journalists," hosted by The Northern Light
  • "This Changes Everything" Movie & Panel, hosted by UAA/APU Books of the Year

To see the entire range of past events, visit the Democracy & Civic Action Week web page.
