Update on legislative action from Chancellor Sandeen

by Michelle Saport  |

Dear UAA Community,

As you have likely heard by now from President Johnsen's message, the Alaska Legislature failed to override Gov. Dunleavy's $130 million veto to the University of Alaska's state-funded budget.

Needless to say, this is not the result any of us fought for, and we are all disappointed; however, we remain hopeful. Today's joint session was recessed until tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. This allows another day for absent legislators to go to Juneau, join their colleagues and reconsider today's override vote.

Thanks to each and every one of you for your staunch advocacy on behalf of the university. For all the letters you wrote, phone calls you made, emails you sent, rallies you attended, op-eds you published, testimonials you gave, and even the hashtags you used, my sincerest thanks.

Our next step will be looking toward a solution and taking guidance from UA President Johnsen and the Board of Regents. The board will meet on Monday, July 15 to determine how we all proceed, including whether the university will declare financial exigency. You may listen in on that important discussion via livestream on the Board of Regents website.

While we all wait as details come into focus, please do not jump to conclusions. The university is an important institution to Anchorage and Alaska. Even with these new funding realities, we will continue with our mission to ensure student success.

Until then, we remain committed to open communication and transparency. Please know that even with these results, no major changes will be implemented for the fall semester, promising a strong start for our students.

Thank you again for your advocacy and continued support. In the meantime, please take care of yourself and one another.

Sincerely, Cathy Sandeen UAA Chancellor
