Kachemak Bay Writers’ Conference on hiatus in 2020

The Kachemak Bay Writers' Conference (KBWC) will be on hiatus in 2020 while planning occurs to review its structure, format, and scope to ensure its sustainable future.

For eighteen years, the KBWC has drawn nearly 2,000 writers and participants from across the country and the world to Homer, Alaska. Bringing together writers of all experience levels with award-winning faculty authors and poets, the conference has served as an important resource to the Alaskan writing community.

KBC Director Emerita Carol Swartz ably led it from 2002 through this year's conference with the help of the conference committee, the Kenai Peninsula College staff, local volunteers, vendors, and donors who played critical roles in the event. We are grateful for all the support the conference has received.

As the university continues to make efforts to downsize, it is important to look at all programming and evaluate its impact on its core mission of educating students. This one year hiatus will provide campus leadership an opportunity to review the conference's purpose and scope, and to make changes necessary for its continued success. We look forward to working with students, faculty, the local community, and the larger Alaskan writing community to bring the conference into its next vibrant incarnation.
