Seawolf Dining helps battle food insecurity at UAA

Food insecurity on campus is real, and in support of September's Hunger Action Month, Seawolf Dining is donating 500 meals to be used at Creekside Eatery. David Weaver, director of housing, will be giving the donated swipes to the UAA Student Health and Counseling Center staff who will be distributing the free meals to students in need.

A recent UAA survey showed that roughly 12.3 percent of the Anchorage population is food insecure and students with this issue may suffer a range of side effects that impedes their academic success. These include a higher risk of diabetes, obesity, lower mental and physical achievement, increased aggression, and depression. These risks, accompanied by the stress of attending university, are detrimental to student well-being.

Seawolf Dining General Manager Matt Little Dog says, "We are committed to assisting the university in its effort to combat student hunger. We want this donation to spark support from students and the public in solving this critical student need here on the UAA campus."

Additionally, Seawolf Dining is raising awareness for meal plan holders who want to donate some of their meal swipes with the Swipe Away Hunger campaign that will run through the month. If you are a student of UAA with a residential or campus meal plan and wish to donate, please see the housing desk at Gorsuch Commons.
