Title IX training for students due Oct. 31

by Michelle Saport  |

Dear Students,

At UAA, we are committed to fostering a culture of respect on our campuses. We will not tolerate violence, harassment or discrimination of any kind on any UAA campus, or in any facility or program.

Through our Seawolves Speak Up campaign, we work with peer educators and staff at the Student Health and Counseling Center and the Office of Equity and Compliance to encourage members of our community to look out for the safety and well-being of one another. I especially encourage you to do so when it comes to sexual harassment. The unfortunate reality is that sexual harassment remains prevalent on university campuses across the country.

As your chancellor, I am strongly resolved to execute this no-tolerance policy. If we are to transform our culture at UAA, we cannot tolerate sexual harassment or discrimination - plain and simple.

We also provide training resources to students to ensure you have the knowledge and tools you need to identify and report behavior that threatens your safety and well-being or that of your fellow students.

Title IX training details UAA Title IX training is an annual requirement for all UAA degree-seeking, residential and international students* and must be completed by Oct. 31. The training is available online and in-person.

*NOTE: If you have experienced trauma in the past related to sex or gender-based discrimination that may impact your ability to take this training, please contact the Office of Equity and Compliance at 907-786-0818 or complete the training opt-out form.

Title IX reporting If you have experienced or are aware of any form of harassment, discrimination or retaliation, please report the incident(s) immediately to the Office of Equity and Compliance by calling 907-786-0818, emailing uaa_titleix@alaska.edu or using this online reporting form.

Reporting ensures that you are provided all of the information you need about your rights and the resources available to you, to enable you to make an informed decision. The reports we receive help us track patterns and improve campus safety and educational prevention efforts for our campus community.

Please speak up and report incidents. Together, we are united in our determination to make our classrooms, residence halls and university facilities safe and inclusive for all students, faculty and staff. Thank you in advance for helping to maintain a campus environment characterized by respect for all.

Sincerely, Cathy Sandeen UAA Chancellor
