2019 Great Alaska Shakeout earthquake drill

by Michelle Saport  |

During the November 2018 earthquake, we saw the benefit of people taking cover from falling debris during a damaging earthquake by getting under a piece of sturdy furniture. This week, UAA will participate in the Great Alaska ShakeOut on 10/17 at 10:17 a.m., and will also test some of our emergency alerting capabilities. For people who are on campus, they should hear a public address announcement through the Cisco speakerphones and see a pop-up notice on UAA computers asking them to Drop, Cover, and Hold on. The exercise will take about one minute. If everyone takes the drill seriously and practices dropping to the floor and taking cover under a desk, they are more likely to remember to do so during the next big earthquake!
