UAA campus community safety notifications

How does the campus community receive safety-related information?

Emergency situations generally necessitate one or more of the following:

  • Timely Warning notices are used to inform the campus community about the occurrence of certain crimes that pose an ongoing threat to the campus community and are required by federal law under the Clery Act.
  • Emergency Notifications are issued by UAA’s Incident Management Team in the event of certain emergency situations.
  • Seawolf Advisories may be issued to inform the community about other safety-related information that is not covered by the Timely Warning notices or Emergency Notification policies.

Please note: Timely Warning notices and Emergency Notification policies are unique to each UAA campus. For in-depth information about Timely Warnings, Emergency Notifications and Seawolf Advisories, please visit the 2019 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report.

Timely Warnings

  • What are Timely Warning notices?

Timely Warning notices are issued when a Clery crime occurs within UAA's Clery geography and is reported to a campus security authority. Notice is issued if the crime represents a serious or ongoing threat to students and employees.

The Clery Act requires colleges and universities to provide timely warnings of crimes that represent a threat to the campus community and to publish their campus security policies. The act also requires that the crime data is collected, reported, and shared with the campus community, the Department of Education, and potential students and employees.

  • What kind of Clery crimes require Timely Warning notices?
Timely warning notices are usually distributed for major incidents of arson, murder/non-negligent manslaughter and robbery. Reports of sex offenses and aggravated assault are considered on a case-by-case basis. Campus safety officials will evaluate whether the assault poses an ongoing threat to the campus community. Timely Warning notices are not typically issued for burglaries or motor vehicle thefts unless they represent a pattern of behavior that poses an ongoing threat.
  • What information is typically included in a Timely Warning notice?
    • Date and time or timeframe of the incident
    • A brief description of the incident
    • Crime prevention or safety tips
    • Suspect description(s) when deemed appropriate and if available
    • University Police contact information
    • Other information as deemed appropriate by the University Police Department

Please note that the content Timely Warning notices vary and will not include information that could compromise law enforcement efforts.

  • How does the campus community receive Timely Warnings?
UAA students, staff and faculty will receive notification via email or via the methods outlined under Emergency Notifications if there is an immediate and ongoing threat to the campus community.

Emergency Notifications

  • When are Emergency Notifications issued?

In the event of an emergency, the University Police Department and/or the UAA Incident Management Team take into account the health and safety of the community, determine the content of the notification and initiate the notification system when deemed appropriate.

Emergency Notifications are issued in a variety of situations. For example, the campus community may be notified when certain crimes are reported and present an ongoing threat to the campus and surrounding communities. In addition, Emergency Notifications may be issued in the event of extreme weather conditions, natural disasters, plane crashes or the presence of hazardous materials, terrorist threats, active shooters, etc.

  • How does the campus community receive Emergency Notifications?
UAA students, staff and faculty automatically receive Emergency Notifications via email, telephone and text from UA Alerts. Emergency Notifications are sent to the preferred email address indicated in UAOnline.
  • Do incidents ever require both a Timely Warning notice and an Emergency Notification?
There are instances where both Timely Warning notices and Emergency Notifications may be necessary. However, an emergency situation does not always require a Timely Warning notice, and a Clery crime that requires a Timely Warning notice does not always constitute an emergency situation.
  • How can I find more information about emergency situations?

In the event of an emergency, you will automatically receive UA Alerts via email, phone call and text. Additional information may also be available through the following communication outlets:

Seawolf Advisories

  • What is a Seawolf Advisory?
A Seawolf Advisory is issued to inform the community about other safety-related information not covered by the Timely Warning notices or Emergency Notification policies. This would include things such as campus closures due to inclement weather or information.
  • How does the campus community receive Seawolf Advisories?

Seawolf Advisories are generally sent via email. Text notifications are generally reserved for campus closures due to inclement weather. Texts are only sent to individuals subscribed to the opt-in list.

*To opt-in for weather alerts, log in to UA Online and go to the "Personal Information" tab. Select the option to manage your address, email and phone information.
