Overcoming Implicit Bias

Wednesday, Feb. 19, 1–2:15 p.m.
Rasmuson Hall, Room 303
Led by Libby Roderick, associate director of CAFE and director of the Difficult Dialogues Initiative

Implicit bias describes the automatic associations individuals make between groups of people and stereotypes about those groups. Under certain conditions, those automatic associations can influence behavior, making individuals and institutions respond in biased ways even when we are not explicitly prejudiced, and have good intentions as well as nondiscriminatory policies and standards.

Please join us for a session exploring the steps we can take to diminish those biases and make our classrooms and campuses even more equitable and inclusive. Members of search committees especially encouraged to attend.

Session is open to faculty, post-docs, GTAs, administrators and staff.

Responding to Microaggressions

Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2:30–3:45 p.m.

Led by Libby Roderick, associate director of CAFE and director of the Difficult Dialogues Initiative

Microaggressions are statements, actions, or incidents that involve indirect, subtle, intentional or unintentional discrimination against members of a minoritized group (racial, ethnic or religious minorities, LGBTQ folks, older people, people with disabilities, etc.). Many studies have found that microaggressions have a significant negative impact on students’ mental and physical health over time and result in a sense of not belonging on campus — one of the chief reasons students fail to complete their academic journeys. Come learn a few strategies for responding to microaggressions when they occur in a classroom setting — let’s make our learning environments safe for all students.
