Dear UAA Community,

I was saddened to learn that Dr. Garth N. Jones died on July 1, 2020, from a stroke at the age of ninety-five. Dr. Jones was the founding dean of the College of Business and Public Policy (1974-1979). He joined the University of Alaska Anchorage in the fall of 1973 as a professor of public administration and political science. Awarded emeritus status in 1987, he continued to teach and held visiting positions at several universities, including the University of Utah, Utah State University, and The Romney Institute of Public Management. He continued to write, publish and lecture in his areas of interest, which included Islamic affairs in South and Southeast Asia. He consulted with the U.S. Department of State and the United Nations, among other agencies. To learn more about his incredible life, you can read his online obituary.

With an endless dedication to education and the College of Business and Public Policy, Dr. Jones established the Garth Nelson and Marie Clegg Jones and Family Scholarship. During his lifetime, he gave nearly $70,000 to support UAA and its students. If you would like to donate in his memory, you may give online to his scholarship.

Garth was laid to rest beside his wife of sixty years, Marie Clegg Jones, in Heber City, Utah.

My condolences go to Garth’s family, friends, and colleagues.
