Celebrating the life and legacy of Greg Myford
by Sean Parnell, UAA Chancellor |
Dear UAA Community,
It is with tremendous sadness that I share the news of Seawolf Director of Athletics Greg Myford's passing last night. Greg's optimism and positivity never wavered, even as he battled cancer. On behalf of the entire UAA community, I would like to extend the deepest condolences to Greg’s family, friends and loved ones.
Greg's commitment to Seawolf student-athletes and their success was a hallmark of his leadership at UAA. Even during the most difficult times in recent years, he maintained that Seawolf Athletics could and would provide a positive path forward for UAA.
Greg joined UAA as Director of Athletics in 2018. There have been 54 All-American honorees and 30 individual conference champions under Greg’s leadership. Additionally, Seawolf Athletics earned four individual National Championships and six GNAC team titles. The pride these successes generated were unmatched for Greg, who always believed in the strength of Seawolf Nation.
Another highlight of Greg's career in Alaska was UAA hosting the prestigious nationally televised Armed Forces Classic in November 2019. Since that time, Greg helped see his athletes and coaches through the COVID-19 pandemic and their return to safe competition, welcoming athletes and fans back to the Alaska Airlines Center. He also helped champion monumental fundraising efforts in support of Seawolf Athletic teams in recent years.
It is always difficult to lose a leader, colleague and friend. I know you join me in mourning this tremendous loss. Greg will be remembered for his positive attitude and his unwavering support of student-athletes. Ryan Swartwood will step in as interim athletic director, effective immediately. I have full confidence Ryan will continue the tradition of Seawolf Athletic excellence.
