New Alaska aquaculture permitting website and guidance document

Current and prospective aquatic farmers in Alaska have a valuable new resource to guide them through submitting, amending, renewing or transferring an aquatic farm application. UAF's Alaska Sea Grant and NOAA Fisheries Alaska Region have launched a web portal and printable manual to assist applicants with the aquatic farm leasing and permitting process.

The mariculture industry in Alaska has great economic potential, and the Governor’s Mariculture Task Force set a goal of growing it into a $100 million industry in 20 years. However, a barrier to achieving that goal included the complex leasing and permitting process. The Task Force noted that farmers are required to file multiple permits with at least four different state and federal agencies—sometimes more, depending on the project. This results in a confusing and time-consuming process.

The permitting portal and guidance document are the result of a collaborative effort by many stakeholders to make the leasing and permitting process easier to navigate and increase permit transparency and efficiency. The portal and guidance document provide great examples of how the university and state and federal agencies can come together to help meet industry needs and advance sustainable aquaculture.
