Nov. 9: Wildfire & Wine Science Pub
by Alaska EPSCoR |
Alaska NSF EPSCoR Fire & Ice program and Telesomm present: A Science Pub chat with Zav Grabinski on wildfire science drivers in Alaska, and Kaitlin Kolarik on the effect of wildfire in wine-growing regions of the US, on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 4:30 p.m.
Register in advance to join us online on Zoom or come watch this science pub in person at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Pub, in the Wood Center. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
About Zav Grabinski
Originally from Fairbanks Alaska, Zav received a master’s in natural resources from
Humboldt State University. His background includes geospatial and visual modeling
of fire interactions on landscapes, regional-scale data analysis of drought impacts
on forests, and website development and design. Currently, Zav is interested in communicating
complex biophysical processes to diverse audiences using modern visualization techniques
and digital-media formats.
This presentation will provide an overview of Alaska’s vast, complex, and changing wildfire environment presented by the Alaska Fire Science Consortium, based on the recent report 'Alaska's Changing Wildfire Environment'. An intensified pattern of wildfire is emerging in Alaska as rapidly increasing temperatures and longer growing seasons alter the state's environment. The impacts of these fires are felt across the state. Topics will include seasonal fire phases, emerging fire trends, wildfire impacts, wildfire management, and the application of science in wildfire management.
About Kaitlin Kolarik
Kaitlin is a photographer turned wine professional based in Atlanta, GA. They manage
3 Parks Wine Shop, an Atlanta wine institution and mainstay of the natural wine scene
in Atlanta. Kaitlin got their start in wine after taking a job at a fancy Spanish
restaurant to pay some bills. Kaitlin quickly discovered there was more to wine through
the restaurant’s incredible wine program. They discovered a penchant for the nerdy
sides of wine: the history, the culture and everything else that happened to get that
bottle into a wine lover’s hands.
Kaitlin’s focus is on “weird wines” made by small producers with incredible stories and funky flavor profiles. Kaitlin believes that there is no end to learning in the wine world and looks forward to meeting you on your wine journey.
