Seawolves compete at Beijing Olympics

The University of Alaska Anchorage had several Seawolves competing at the Beijing Olympics.

Mat Robinson competed in his second Olympics representing Canada in men's ice hockey. Canada finished the tournament 3-2 overall. The Calgary, Alberta, native scored the first goal of the game in Canada's 4-2 loss to the United States in pool play. Robinson, a defenseman, played in all five games for Canada scoring one goal and finishing +2.

JC Schoonmaker, a current member of the UAA ski team, competed in three events in Nordic skiing for the United States. The Tahoe City, Calif., native finished ninth in the team sprint with teammate Ben Ogden. He finished 13th in the freestyle sprints and 66th in the 15-kilometer classic.

Hailey Swirbul competed in three Nordic skiing events for the United States. The El Jebel, Colo., native skied the opening leg of the women's relay that finished sixth. She placed 32nd in the 10-kilometer classic race and 40th in the skiathlon.

Casey Wright represented Australia for the second time in Nordic skiing. The Melbourne, Australia, native finished 16th in the team sprint with teammate Jessica Yeaton. She finished 56th in the 30-kilometer freestyle, 65th in the freestyle sprint and 67th in the 10-kilometer classic. 

Gus Schumacher, current UAA student and Alaska Winter Stars Athlete, competed in three events in Nordic skiing for the United States. The Anchorage, Alaska, native skied as part of the men's relay team that finished ninth. He placed 48th in the 15-kilometer classic race and 39th in the skiathlon.

UAA natural sciences alumna Zuzana Rogers was also at the Beijing Olympics as a volunteer physical therapist with the US Ski Team.
